Genie Update

Go to the link above and read about Genie today.  This also gives information on her brother.  You will have a quiz on this on Thursday! Be ready :)

Also for participation points, you need to comment on this blog.  For your comment, write down ONE thing you learned about Genie and ONE question you would like to know about Genie (if I can find the answer to your question I will...however Genie's life is very private today).

GO TROJANS!

One thing I learned: Genie had been found as a thirteen year old girl with the mental capacity of an infant.

One question: What were Genie's thoughts like all of those years when she didn't even know how to put them into words inside her head?

  2. Learned-Genie is in her 6th foster home.

Question- Why did they think it would be a good idea to have her in foster homes?

I learned that although Genie did progress a little with her speech, to this day she still cannot talk.
My question is why wouldn't her brother tell authorities what was being done to his younger sister?

  14. She has an older brother who was left behind.
Why can't Genie live with Curtiss since she seems to be the only one that would want to see her without money invovled?

    1. One thing I learned about Genie is that she is still alive today! Even though her communication skills are gone, she is living at a physciatric ward.
    2. I want to know why she cannot speak anymore? How did the communication skills wither away over time?

I learned that Genie was locked away just because her father thought she was mentaly retarded. My question is, was Genie? Did she ever try to fight back?

I learned that a film was made about the doctor's point of view on the whole situation. It seemed like someone would stick up for him and show that he had good intentions.

One question I have is, why did the brother help so much in locking Genie up? Why did the father feel misunderstood?

I want to know why she cant speak again though? Cuz she learned how to speak??

In the film, I learned the doctors persepective and how much pontential was lost once they lost the funding for genie

    My question-
What would have happened if the funding hadn't been pulled? Would Genie recover fully?

  22. Something that I learned about Genie is that she is a very complex and quick learning person, who needs special care because of the unfortunate cirucumstances that she was brought up in.

Something that I would like to know about Genie, is if she really had a mental disorder or if this was all something that was caused by her father. Also if she is aware of what happened to her growing up, or if she thinks this is the way she was born.

  23. 1.Genie actually did progress while in the Children's Hospital despite what some people thought that she wouldn't be able to.

  25. I learned Genie never spoke again after she was punished for vomiting. One thing I would like to know about Genie is how she thinks in her head. For example, when people think, we talk to ourselves in our heads. I wonder what she does.

  26. Something I learned about Genie's life is that she was moved around a lot. She has been in 6 different Foster homes since the research stopped. She also lived with her mom for a couple weeks but her mom wasn't able to support Genie because her mom was partially blind.

The question I have is, is Genie's brother able to see her? Or is he not apart of her life anymore?

One thing I have learned about Genie from this article is that she had an older brother. Why did the study end when she turned 18? Why didn't the brother do anything about his sister being locked up in her room? I learned that Genie never regained her speech after her foster parents punished her for vomitting. That probably brought bad memories up from her past.

  28. Jean Butler was only interested in making a name fore herself. I thought she really cared about Genie's situation but she told colleagues she wanted to be the next Annie Sullivan! I was shocked! A girl that has been through so much was only being used by some.

Why couldnt Genie stay with her brother once he grew up?

  32. I learned that Genie had no say in who was to take care of her. That is why she went through numerous caregivers and situations.
I would like to know if Genie would remember any of the researchers and people who helped her if they were to find her.

  33. One thing I learned about Genie is that she did become attached to people, she learned to like being stroked or hugged. and she started to show more emotion than just a tearless cry.

one thing I would like to know about her is her real name! I know they can't give it out but it would be cool to know it. I would like to know if she kept working to learn language and is able to speak more than 20 words.

  34. I learned about Genie that she only had 2 phrases in her vocabulary because that was all she could say because she was abused and probally had nothing else worth saying. Its really sad when you think about her not being able to be normal because her father was so selfish.

I want to know if Genie ever got to actually meet her brother? I wonder if he new what was really going on because he was little and he wasnt abused to the same extent as Genie was.

  35. I learned that after a child hits puberty they cant learn a language. But in some ways Genie disproved that.

  36. What I learned- I learned from Genie that anyone can be human given the proper time, care and attention and that every human should be given that opportunity.
My question- How could Genie say, "stop it" and "no more" if her father probably never muttered that while he was beating her? How did she know to say that?

  41. Suprised that Genie had a brother in the first place. His name was John Wiley, i could not believe that he was abused by his father as well.

What ever happened to Genie in the future, did she ever get married? Had she ever fallen in love?

  42. One thing I learned about Genie is that her brother would sometimes go in the room to feed her and was told to hit her if she made any noises.

  43. I learned that Genie has a brother who is 5 years older than her.
I would like to know why efforts werent made to work with genie after her tramatic experience with her foster parents. Why didn't they take a few months trying to undo that damage for HER good? after four years you would have thought at least one of them would care enough about her to take her in the the state wouldn't pay her hospital bills. The poor kid just needed someone who could work with her consistantly because she WAS improving and learning to function.

  44. Genie's brother also got abused when he was growing up by the dad.

What is Genie's brother up to today and are him and Genie in contact at all?

One thing that I learned about Genie was that she was put into 6 different foster homes. Another thing that I learned was that no one really knows where she is right now. People know that she is a mental building but they don't know where.

One question that I have about Genie is why she won't talk after her vomit problem? What did the people do to her that would not make her talk anymore?

One thing i learned about Genie was that she had a brother who was six years older than her.
One thing i would like to know about Genie was why no one helped her after she came back obviously tramatized from her experiences at her foster homes. Why wasn't a short period of time spent getting her past her refusal to speak to give her a better outlook at life? After spending four plus year with her, didn't any of her doctors care for her?? Why didn't THEY take her in and just continue her therapy? She could have possibly been able to function one day and lived a far better life.

  51. One thing I learned from reading about Genie is that she is now 51 years old and living in a mental ward. She has a person who looks after her and still at age 51 speaks little to no words. A question I have about Genie is if she knows that she is different from peole raised not in isolation?
